An earthquake hit the Turkish city of Van on October 23rd. 481 people died and 1,650 are injured in the 7.2 magnitude quake, according to Interior Ministry. Nearly 1,000 buildings were destroyed in the disaster zone, with the town of Ercis the worst hit where about 80 multi-story buildings collapsed. Ercis is an eastern city of 75,000 close to the Iranian border in one of Turkey’s most earthquake-prone zones .The death toll is expected to rise as outlying areas are reached.
